As the newly appointed chair of the British Science Association’s Board of Trustees, Gisela Abbam provides strategic oversight of BSA’s vision and aims. She works to ensure a world where science is seen as a fundamental part of society and culture. Gisela has been named Black British Businessperson of the Year.
Abbam is well-suited for this position. She brings more than 25 years of business experience and over 15 years as a global thought leader and executive who has directed campaigns and delivered change in the health and life sciences sector across the world. Throughout her career, she’s focused on improving equality in global health and development. She has collaborated with governments, the World Health Organization, the United Nations, the World Bank and other multilateral organizations to impact health outcomes internationally.
Abbam is a bold leader who uses her skills and influence to drive change. She is the founding chair of the Global Diagnostic Imaging, Healthcare IT & Radiation Therapy Trade Association (DITTA) Global Health Working Group, which represents more than 600 companies. And she served on the inaugural leadership team that established the Centre for Public Health Excellence at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
Abbam is a passionate advocate for the betterment of society through science and health. She was drawn to BSA’s goals of transforming the diversity and inclusivity of science; reaching underserved audiences; and growing science literacy among the general population.
Professional Summary
Gisela Abbam is a freelance independent consultant for a number of international organizations. Her background includes Director of Strategic Partnerships at Abt Associates, where she developed global strategic partnerships with organizations around the world. Before that, she was the Global Executive Director for Government Affairs & Policy at GE Healthcare. In this role, she set up the global government affairs and policy function and was the inaugural Global Executive Director, which provided transformational medical technologies to health customers in more than 100 countries.
She is a subject matter expert in global health solutions, has published more than 45 white papers on various public policy issues, and is a sought-after speaker for International conferences. She also served on the Global Health and the Future of the USA report for the National Academy of Medicine with Dr. Stephanie Ferguson.
